Fred Astaire
(1899–1987)
Anecdote...
Attracted by Hollywood as a young dancer, Astaire submitted himself for the usual screen test. The verdict has become part of film history: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little."
Quote-worthy...
Ijust put my feet in the air and move them around. —Fred Astaire
Biographical Note...
U.S. stage and film dancer, singer, and actor, whose partnership with Ginger Rogers produced a series of films that charmed the world. Invariably playing the role of an elegant playboy, Astaire achieved such remarkable skill that both Balanchine and Nureyev have described him as the world's greatest dancer.
Astaire was an extraordinary talent who made everything he did look easy, although he apparently worked very hard to create that effect. His defining role was with dance partner Ginger Rogers in "Top Hat." Other notable films include: "Swing Time", "Funny Face", and "The Towering Inferno." Late in his career, Astaire played Robert Wagner's father for one season on the popular '60s TV series, "It Takes A Thief."
