Francisco FrancoFranco had remarkable powers of endurance and persisted in surviving long after the time that even many of his supporters considered appropriate. On his deathbed, his aide announced that a General García wanted to be admitted to say goodbye to him. Franco asked, "Why, is García going on a trip?"

Biographical Note...

Spanish general and statesman. Commander in chief of the Falangists in the Spanish Civil War, he established a dictatorship (1939) after the defeat of the Republican government. He maintained Spain's neutrality during World War II and remained head of state until his death.
