During the negotiations with the Arabs, Mrs. Meir insisted on meeting her opponents face to face. A journalist suggested that this was not necessary. “Even divorces are arranged without personal confrontation,” he argued. “I’m not interested in a divorce,” retorted Mrs. Meir. “I’m interested in a marriage.”

Not long after Richard Nixon had nominated Henry Kissinger as U.S. secretary of state he had a meeting with Golda Meir. Nixon observed that they both now had Jewish foreign ministers. “Yes,” said Mrs. Meir, and then with Kissinger’s German accent in mind, added, “But mine speaks English.”

Biographical Note: 

Golda Meir was an Israeli stateswoman, born in Russia, educated in the United States. She was a founding member of the Israeli Workers’ Party and its secretary general (1966–68). She became prime minister of Israel in 1969, but resigned in 1974 after the first Arab-Israeli war.
