"Don't introduce me to him," said Lamb urgently when a friend offered to present a man whom Lamb had for a long time disliked by hearsay. "I want to go on hating him, and I can't do that to a man I know."


Biographical Note...

English essayist, poet, and literary critic. From 1796 he had charge of his sister, Mary, who had killed their mother in a fit of madness. His attempts as a dramatist were failures, but he wrote, with Mary, the popular book for children called Tales from Shakespeare (1807). His essays for the London Magazine were published in volume form as Essays of Elia (1823; second series, 1833).
