B i o g r a p h i c a l . N o t e . . . British naval commander, great-grandson of Queen Victoria. A flotilla commander at the beginning of World War II, he was made chief of combined operations in 1942 and subsequently supreme allied commander in southeast Asia (1943-46). After the war he served as viceroy (1947) and governor-general (1947-48) of India, First Sea Lord (1955-59), and chief of defense staff (1959-65). He was assassinated by an IRA bomb in 1979.
