Paw Prints TidBits for November

The end of the year is in sight. There's lots to be done between now and then, though, like finding your way through a mine field of calories and wrapping paper. So grab the cat, pat the dog, kiss the baby and enjoy the season.

Our anecdote for November is about Ernestine Schumann-Heink, a talented singer known for her sense of humor and hearty appetite. The slideshow this month focuses on black cats and the sidebar has a few rules for cat lovers. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Anecdote of the Month

Ernestine Schumann-Heink (1861-1936)

A n e c d o t e . . .

Ernestine Schumann-HeinkConditions were rather cramped in the Detroit concert hall where Schumann-Heink was to perform. As the portly singer struggled through the orchestra pit to make her entrance, music racks crashed to the floor. The conductor looked on in alarm. "Sideways, madam," he whispered urgently, "go sideways."

"Mein Gott!" cried the singer in reply. "I haff no sideways!"

Austrian-born contralto. She was a noted interpreter of Wagnerian roles and was known for her sense of humor and hearty appetite. She became a naturalized American citizen in 1908. Her voice, of an even quality in all registers, possessed great power, making it peculiarly suitable to Wagnerian roles.
