Blue Orchard Bee

Blue Orchard Bee
This bee, Osmia ribifloris (on a barberry flower), is an effective pollinator of commercial blueberries.

Bees

  • The bee has 12,000 eyes.
  • Bees are found on every continent except Antarctica.
  • A bee's brain weighs less than four hundred-thousandths of an ounce.
  • Eggs laid by a queen bee in one day outweigh her. By the way, she can control whether her offspring is male or female.
  • It would take about 500 bee stings to kill the average person. But don't depend on that. Lots of people are much more vulnerable than that suggests.
  • Bees do not fly in a beeline. When they're out looking for pollen, they zigzag to follow the scent. As the scent starts to fade, the bee changes its direction, again and again. That's no beeline.
  • Bees won't fly when the wind blows more than 15 mph.
  • The honeybee is totally deaf.
  • It takes twelve honeybees working together their entire lifetimes to make about a teaspoonful of honey.
  • The same sort of honeybee that dies when it stings a human does not die when it stings another honeybee.
