Crabs

- The fiddler crab is called that because one claw is so big that it looks like a violin, the other so small that it looks like a bow.
- Horseshoe crabs chew their food with their legs.
- Land crabs are edible, too.
- One sort of crab, called the sand bubbler, breathes mostly through discs on its legs.
- A crab's blood is blue...from the copper in its diet. (YOUR blood is RED because of the iron in yours!)
- A Cuban land crab can outrun a horse.
- The purse crab, a giant relative of the hermit crab, finds food not in the water but in the trees. It uses its powerful pincers and long legs to climb coconut palms and snip off the young coconuts, which it then eats on the ground.
- The hermit crab lives inside an empty shell, on which a sea anemone often rides as a "bodyguard." The anemone's stinging tentacles deter predators, and in return it gains mobility and thus a wider feeding range, as well as scraps of the crab's food.
