- The gopher got its name from French settlers
who named it "gaufre," which means "honeycomb"...that's
what the structure of the gopher's den most closely
resembles.
- A good source for potting soil is the dirt from
gopher mounds. It's already pulverized and the
gopher has removed all the seeds.
- In water, a muskrat can kill a mink...and will.
On land, a mink can kill a muskrat...and will.
- Some mink farmers once used pink lights over
their cages. That produced mostly males. But they
get better pelts from females. So they switched
to blue lights. That produces mostly females.
- Muskrats are called muskrats because they smell
funny.
- People in Holland trap thousands of muskrats
every year to prevent them from boring holes in
their dikes.
