- Why was the guinea pig called that? Because it
squeals a bit. And grunts. And was first sold as
a cheap novelty in England for a guinea.
- There aren't any guinea pigs in the wild. South
Americans domesticated them over 3,000 years
ago.
- Guinea pigs don't sweat.
- Longest lived guinea pig was 14 years old.
- A hamster can put half its weight in food into
its cheek pouches.
- In 1930 somebody in Syria captured a pair of
hamsters. All of the world's caged hamsters descend
from that pair, or so say the historical footnotes.
