The kiwi is the only bird with nostrils at the very end of its beak! This helps kiwis use their highly developed sense of smell to locate worms and other food buried in the ground.
Kiwis are native to New Zealand and have very poor eyesight, seeing only about seven feet at night and less than three feet during the day. They have no tail, have thick hair-like feathers, and cannot fly.
Although the kiwi has wings, they are only about 1 inch long and are useless, completely hidden under the feathers.
The kiwi has no tail but does have very strong, muscular legs, which make up about a third of the bird’s total body weight, that are used for running and fighting.
Despite its small size and awkward appearance, the kiwi can outrun a human.
