Llamas, Vicunas, & Yaks

  • Llamas were native to South Dakota.
  • Campers use llamas in Colorado—not to ride on, but to carry the camping gear.
  • You can't overwork a llama. When it decides the load is too heavy, it drops to the ground and won't go any farther.
  • The finest wool in the world comes from the South American vicuna.
  • Wool from a vicuna is very expensive because the vicuna is very difficult to catch. It's one animal that can't be domesticated.
  • A lot of domestic yaks don't have horns.
  • The wild yak is almost twice as big as the domestic working variety.
  • The yak is a mountain beast. If you take it down into the valley it'll probably get malaria.
  • Domesticated yaks don't wear a harness. To make it go right or left, the driver throws rocks at it.
  • Wanna see a drawing of a llama ? vicuna ? yak ?
