- The best talker among chatty birds is the mynah.
- It's in the spring when the male canaries start
to sing. That's when their androgen levels are
high.
- Birds may be the only vertebrates that continue
to produce new brain cells after they are mature.
Experts think that's why a canary has to learn
a new mating song every year.
- In 1873 it turned suddenly very cold. Historical
footnotes mention that the canaries that were
supposed to sing at Ulysses S. Grant's inaugural
ball froze to death.
- The male canary is the only bird sold with a
guarantee to sing. (Female canaries don't sing.)
- The canary wasn't yellow until man started to manage its breeding process.
- Mynahs are part of the starling family. Starlings are among the fastest flying birds. After a few wing beats they do not close their wings, but keep them spread out so as to glide.
- In the wild the mynah's notes vary from low, hoarse chuckles to loud, ringing whistles that carry far. In captivity they often learn to mimic human speech and environmental sounds.
- In the wild, mynahs usually travel in pairs.
