All About Roses
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet [Shakespeare]
-
There are three main groupings of roses: the Species (like the 'wild roses'); Old Garden Roses (classes of roses in existance before 1867); and Modern Roses (classes of roses NOT in existance before 1867).*
- A "rose hip" is the fruit of the rose which contains the seeds.*
- Roses have two types of roots: anchor roots and hair roots.*
- The 'anchor' roots are thick and strong, they hold the rose bush upright while it is growing. They also store nutrients during the winter season.*
- The 'hair roots' are the feeder roots. Their main job is to absorb the nutrients in the soil as they become available.*
- Roses have been cultivated from the earliest time of man's existence and continue to be a favorite to this day.
- Cabbage roses—popular in Renaissance art—arose around the sixteenth century. They were a cross between the Damask and the Alba rose.
- Modern roses are mostly hybrid tea roses and floribunda roses.
