Pink Dogwood
Cornus florida

Numerous varieties of Dogwood are represented in the insignia of U.S. states and Canadian provinces. It is possible that the common name of Dogwood may have come because at one time "dogs were washed with a brew of its bark, hence Dogwood."

California Poppy
Eschscholzia californica

The California poppy is the California state flower. It was selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890, winning out over the Mariposa lily and the Matilija poppy by a landslide, but the state legislature did not make the selection official until 1903. April 6 of each year is designated "California Poppy Day."

Winter Beauty

Camellias originated in subtropical regions in China, Japan and neighbouring countries. They love warm wet summers and moderately cold dry winters, but are grown around the world in a wide range of climatic conditions. Sacramento, California, is called the Camellia City because of all the Camellia japonicas that bloom in early spring.
